Zines – 2018 to now

concept

c8400 produces and publishes miscellaneous zines. Each zine is an individual artwork at a small and portable scale, designed to communicate a certain concept or idea to the reader.

The techniques vary, but very often zines are designed directly on paper (without digital tools) and then multiplied for distribution using printing means (photocopy, riso). This means that many of these zines do not exist in digital form, but only on paper.

The zines are sold exclusively at art book fairs by c8400 itself. The dissemination of the zines and the direct customer interaction is regarded as a part of the artwork. Concepts are developed, executed and disseminated to customers directly by the producer, without any intermediaries, with direct feedback.

This process attempts to follow in the steps (of the largely failed) attempts of conceptual artists to de-materialize art. The communicative and social aspect of art is foregrounded. The zine is a best value for money, the lightest medium that still conforms to the need of a material carrier of ideas. It is, in terms of the resources required for it to come into existence, a much less resource intensive medium than anything else.

The practice originates in previous c8400 publications, notably the Consumption series. (See separate entries on the main page).
