artist statement

My core areas of interest lies in systems of signs. I use different ways to visually convey the processes taking place in signification – the creation of meaning. I am especially interested in relationships between city and language, space and semantics: How we do ‘read’ our urban living environment. Architecture is universal in it’s ‘nature’, yet it is highly culturally different – a feature which it shares with language.

Since 2008 was creating a series of works which focus on how people ‘read’ architecture and urban space that surrounds them. The backbone is a sequence of 3 series of works which map the process of ‘reading’ the city (based on semiotic theory):

(1) Signifier series (2008): identifying single architectural elements
(2) Secondness series (2009): identifying relations between architectural elements and thus creating a structure
(3) Viewpoint series (2010): identifying the relation between structure and three-dimensional space and thus creating a complete image of the architecture/urban space to which we relate.

Starting from this ‘base’ my following works concentrate on specific problems which exist within the framework described above. For example, the work Viewpoint Interpretation (2010) deals with the relationship between the object observed and the observer. The work ghost/tw (2010) asks what the role of memory and cultural background is when ‘reading architecture’.

The latest work, Corporation (2011), explores a new line of thought, by moving into the imaginary space of an enterprise. The series of drawings explores relations between the physical office space and the conceptual space which is being created there in the form of relational and processual models.
